5 Plastic Surgery Do’s & Don’ts

5 Plastic Surgery Dos & DontsDr. Tony Youn visits with Rachael Ray today to share what he calls the 5 do’s and don’ts of cosmetic surgery. As many cosmetic surgeons will tell you, patients often have to be turned away because they either have unrealistic expectations or simply because they are not candidates for the procedure they want.

  1. Belly fat – A belly that sticks out is different from one with loose skin. This is often known as visceral fat, the fat that lives inside the body among the intestines and other organs and no physician can {liposuction this fat. Dr. Youn explains that if the fat is above the muscle, then it can be removed with either tummy tuck, lipo, or a combination of both.
  2. Injections – Frightening stories of people having silicone injections in hotel rooms have been in the news lately, and it’s a good idea to understand what these are. Patients are getting injections of silicone, which is often not medical grade but rather the same kind used in industrial applications. Always seek out a licensed professional with the proper materials.
  3. Facelifts – Patients are always in search of a procedure that will give them facelift results without the pain and downtime of surgery. However, it’s important to remember that these results are often temporary. Instead, Dr. Youn suggests a mini facelift, which still requires anesthesia and one to two weeks of recovery time.
  4. Fat Transfer – A good option for patients whose faces are beginning to lose volume and sag is a fat transfer. Fat is removed from one part of the body an injected into the face. Dr. Youn says the procedure only takes about an hour, leaves no visible scars and can last from 5-10 years. He does point out that patients tend to look a little swollen after, but will heal in about 2 weeks.
  5. Cellulite – Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for cellulite, but it can be reduced temporarily. The Cellupulse device is one new option for patients. It’s not yet FDA approved for cellulite treatment but results can last for 3 months or more.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns and your expectations to find the right procedure for you.
